Older driver assessment preparation for NSW drivers

Older driver assessment lessons in Liverpool and Campbelltown

Ashraf and George prepare drivers aged 75 and over for the NSW older driver practical assessment, with unhurried one-to-one lessons on the local roads you already drive.

What the assessment is

The NSW older driver assessment, explained plainly

Transport for NSW asks drivers aged 85 and over to pass a practical driving assessment every two years to keep an unrestricted licence. Driving School Liverpool Centre does not conduct that assessment. We teach the driving it looks at, so you arrive on the day having already done the drive.

A drive on ordinary roads

An authorised older driver assessor sits beside you for a drive on normal suburban and arterial roads, watching how you observe, position the car and choose your speed, rather than setting you tricks or asking for anything unusual.

Booked through Service NSW

You book the practical driving assessment through Service NSW with an authorised older driver assessor, and Service NSW alone decides the result. A driving school lesson prepares you for that drive and never replaces it.

Practice you can do first

Nothing stops you rehearsing the same roads, turns and manoeuvres beforehand with a Transport for NSW accredited instructor, which is exactly what a Driving School Liverpool Centre older driver assessment lesson is for.

What NSW asks, and when

Licence milestones for older drivers in NSW

The requirements below come from the Transport for NSW older driver licensing system and change with your age, not with your postcode. Confirm your own dates with Service NSW, because the letter about your licence is the document that counts.

Your ageWhat NSW asks of youHow a lesson helps
75 and overA medical assessment from your doctor every year, so your licence stays current.A private skills check gives you and your doctor real evidence about your driving, taken from an hour on the road rather than from a waiting room.
85 and over, unrestricted licenceA practical driving assessment with an authorised older driver assessor every two years, on top of the annual medical. Two or three practice lessons on the roads near your home rebuild the observation, parking and give-way habits the assessor watches.
85 and over, modified licenceNo practical driving assessment, in exchange for a licence limited to a local area set by Transport for NSW.A lesson helps you decide honestly whether the drives you actually make each week fit inside a local area licence.
Any age, after a health changeA medical review, and sometimes a driving assessment, when your doctor or Service NSW asks for one.Practice after surgery, a fall or a change in medication rebuilds the routine before anyone is watching you drive.

Service NSW decides, not us

Every licence condition, medical review and assessment date is set by Service NSW. This page explains the driving, so that you can practise it.

How preparation works

From your first call to assessment day

One driver, one instructor and one automatic car, with free door-to-door pick-up across every suburb on this page, seven days a week from 7am to 7pm.

1

Tell us your suburb and your date

Use the form at the top of this page to name your suburb and, if you have one, your assessment date, so the enquiry reaches Ashraf for the Liverpool region or George Hany for Campbelltown and Macarthur.

2

Take one honest assessment drive

Your first hour is an ordinary drive near your home while your instructor watches observation, head checks, road position, speed choice and manoeuvres, then tells you plainly which of them are already at assessment standard.

3

Practise the two or three things that matter

Most older drivers need work on a short, named list, such as head checks before a lane change, roundabout give-way decisions or reverse parking, and each lesson ends with clear feedback on that list.

4

Drive your assessment already familiar with it

Your instructor rehearses the roads around the Service NSW centre you are booked at, so on the day you are repeating a drive you have done rather than meeting it for the first time.

What the assessor watches

The driving an older driver assessment actually looks at

An older driver assessment is not a test of how long you have held your licence. The assessor watches the same safe-driving behaviours all day, and every one of them can be practised in advance with your instructor.

Head checks and mirror routine

The item older drivers most often lose marks on is the head check over the shoulder before a lane change or a merge, because decades of driving quietly replace it with a mirror glance. Your instructor rebuilds the full routine.

Seating position and comfortable movement

If turning to look over your shoulder has become uncomfortable, your instructor works on seat height, mirror setup and how far you actually need to turn, and will say honestly when the question belongs with your doctor or an occupational therapist.

Gap selection and giving way

Judging gaps at a roundabout on The Northern Road, or turning right across Newbridge Road at Moorebank, takes practice, and repeating the same intersection several times in one lesson is what makes the decision quick again.

Speed choice in changing zones

School zones, the 40km/h shopping strips in Liverpool and Campbelltown and the drop to 40km/h when passing a stationary emergency vehicle all get rehearsed, because an assessor marks the speed you did not notice as well as the speed you chose.

Reverse parking and manoeuvres

Reverse parallel parking, ninety-degree bays and three-point turns are practised against fixed reference points on quiet streets first, then repeated in a real shopping-centre car park where other cars are moving.

Driving calmly with someone beside you

Driving while a stranger writes on a clipboard is its own skill. Sitting beside a professional instructor for a few hours makes the assessor's presence ordinary instead of unnerving.

Where the lessons happen

Practise on the roads you drive every week

An older driver assessment lesson is worth most when it is driven on the streets you actually use, so every lesson starts at your front door instead of at a depot or on a closed track.

In the Liverpool region, Ashraf begins on quiet Chipping Norton and Wattle Grove streets, then adds Governor Macquarie Drive, the Westfield Liverpool car park and the roads around the Service NSW centre on Orange Grove Road at Warwick Farm, where many Liverpool assessments are booked.

Across Campbelltown and Macarthur, George Hany starts on the calm crescents of Ruse, Raby and Kearns, then builds toward Narellan Road, the Macarthur Square approaches and the Macquarie Fields area, so the practice matches the centre you have been given.

The trips that matter most usually turn out to be short and specific, such as the drive to the medical centre, the grandchildren's school and the shops, and your instructor is glad to build an entire lesson around exactly those three.

Free pick-up and drop-off

Your instructor collects you from home anywhere in the suburb list below, so the lesson begins the moment you sit down.

driving lessons in Chipping Norton

Early control work runs on Wilby Street and Ashfordby Street, three-point turns on Derby Crescent, then a measured move into Governor Macquarie Drive traffic.

learning to drive in Cabramatta

A busy town centre with constant pedestrian movement. Lessons here sharpen observation timing and hazard awareness more than anywhere else on the Liverpool side.

driving instructors covering Campbelltown

George's home ground. Lessons start on quiet crescents, then build to Narellan Road's multi-lane intersections, the Macarthur Square approaches and the Hume Motorway interchanges.

lessons on Macquarie Fields roads

Has its own Service NSW driver testing centre, which makes it the natural test choice for learners in the northern Macarthur suburbs.

Who books these lessons

Older drivers, and the families who help them book

Most enquiries to this page come from one of the four situations below, and every one of them is treated as a driver keeping a licence rather than a driver losing one.

Drivers turning 85 with an assessment due

A driver who has just received the Transport for NSW letter can book two or three lessons before the assessment date, then walk into the drive already knowing the roads, the manoeuvres and the routine the assessor will watch.

Drivers aged 75 to 84 wanting reassurance

A driver with a few years before any practical assessment can book a single private skills check, hear an honest professional opinion and correct small habits early, while there is plenty of time to correct them.

Adult children raising a difficult subject

A son or daughter worried about a parent's driving can book a neutral hour with an accredited instructor, which turns a hard family conversation into a factual one and often ends better than the family expected.

Drivers returning after illness or surgery

A driver cleared by their doctor after a hospital stay, a fall or a change in medication can rebuild the driving routine at a gentle pace before returning to the school run or the weekly shop.

Assessment day

Arrive with everything sorted except the driving

Service NSW sends you the formal instructions for your practical driving assessment. This is the short, practical list drivers tell us they wish they had checked the week before.

Your assessment is driven in a car that is registered, roadworthy and insured, and most older drivers use their own vehicle because it is the one they know. Check the tyres, lights, indicators and windscreen a few days ahead, not on the morning.

Bring your licence, and your glasses if your licence names them as a condition. Book the drive for the time of day you normally drive, so the glare, traffic and energy levels are the ones you are used to, and keep a quiet half hour beforehand instead of arriving straight from something else.

Before assessment day

  • Current NSW licence, plus glasses or contact lenses if your licence requires them
  • The Service NSW letter showing your date, time and location
  • A registered, roadworthy car with working lights and indicators
  • A booking time that matches when you normally drive
  • One or two practice lessons on the roads near the centre
  • Any medical paperwork your doctor has asked you to carry

Your local instructor

The suburb field sends your enquiry to the right instructor

Driving School Liverpool Centre gives you one instructor who remembers what you worked on last time, which matters more to an older driver preparing for an assessment than to anyone else in the car.

Ashraf — Liverpool

Ashraf teaches the Liverpool region and keeps an older driver lesson on the goal you named, so a driver in Chipping Norton, Moorebank or Casula rehearses their own streets and the Warwick Farm assessment area instead of a beginner syllabus.

George Hany — Campbelltown and Macarthur

George has taught driving in the Macarthur region since 2005, and his calm, unhurried manner is the reason families in Campbelltown, Camden and Narellan book him for a parent rather than for a teenager.

Before you book

What the driving school does, and what Service NSW does

Older driver assessment lessons are ordinary driving lessons taught at the school's published rates. A few points are worth being clear about before the first booking.

We prepare you, we do not assess you

Driving School Liverpool Centre teaches older driver assessment preparation as one-to-one lessons with a Transport for NSW accredited instructor. The school does not conduct the official older driver practical driving assessment, does not issue or renew licences and cannot change a licence condition.

  • Book the practical driving assessment itself through Service NSW with an authorised older driver assessor.
  • Medical assessments, medical reviews and licence conditions are handled by your doctor and Service NSW.
  • No lesson guarantees an assessment result, a licence renewal or an insurance outcome.

You need a current, valid licence

You do the driving in these lessons, so you must hold a current NSW or otherwise valid driver licence, and you must wear any glasses or contact lenses your licence names as a condition. Tell your instructor about any medical condition or medication that affects your driving before the first lesson.

  • Bring your licence to every lesson.
  • If your licence has expired or been suspended, contact Service NSW before booking a lesson.

Lesson prices, packages and cancellations

An older driver assessment lesson costs the same as any other lesson, so a single hour, a two-hour session or a multi-hour package is charged at the published rate. Most older drivers book between one and four hours in total.

Professional standards

Checks and memberships behind every lesson

Driving School Liverpool Centre instructors hold Transport for NSW accreditation, Australian Driver Trainers Association membership, Working with Children Checks and National Police Checks, which is the standard a family should expect before an instructor collects a parent from home.
